MCC employee, program honored at event
A MiraCosta College employee and one of the college’s programs were recognized recently at the annual San Diego North Economic Development Council awards luncheon. The event honors the economic development achievements throughout North County. Sudarshan Shaunak, a MiraCosta College employee who helps entrepreneurs grow their businesses or start new ones, was honored at the event. Shaunak directs the North San Diego Small Business Development Center, a program hosted by the college and supported by federal and state funding. The center has helped people start more than 650 new businesses, create or keep more than 3,700 jobs, obtain $168 million in financing, and win more than $616 million in government contracts. Shaunak’s team conducts more than 120 workshops and provides free one-on-one mentoring to more than 1,000 business owners every year. He also serves on the MiraCosta College Foundation Board. The second award, to MiraCosta’s Technology Career Institute, honored its Cooperative Education Reskilling and Training Pilot Program, which received $3.5 million in funding for a job training program focusing on disadvantaged and unemployed adults. Harbor Freight Tools has announced that it will be opening a new store at 170 Knoll Road this winter. An official opening date will be announced closer to opening. Construction has already begun at the location, using local workers and companies. The store is expected to bring from 25 to 30 new jobs to the community, including sales and logistic supervisors, senior associates, sales associates, and seasonal opportunities.
